Forty years ago, on January 24, 1984, with a television commercial that made history, Apple gave birth to the personal computer revolution by launching the Machintosh.

The device marks the arrival on the market of the computer with a standard mouse (a bizarre device for the time) and an innovative 'graphical' operating system with easy-to-understand icons - which we all know by now - such as the waste bin, the desk, the windows, thus opening the use of the computer even to people who are not tech savvy.

40 years later, Cupertino is expected to contribute to AI-based computing in the same way it changed the world of smartphones with the iPhone.

Steve Jobs had worked and actively participated in the development of the Mac also because he had to contend with two feared and very young Bill Gates and Paul Allen from rival Microsoft.

Director Ridley Scott was the author of the Mac television commercial entitled 1984, loosely based on the novel by George Orwell and the film Blade Runner directed by the same director two years earlier.

It was shown during the Super Bowl commercial break on January 22, 40 years ago.

It featured an athlete who threw a hammer at the giant-screen TV image of a dictator, Big Brother.

“You'll understand why 1984 won't be like 1984,” the commercial read at the end.
