Luigi "Gigi" Riva
, who had been admitted last week to the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari after suffering a heart attack.
The European champion with the
Azzurra
in 1968 was awaiting heart surgery after having suffered a decompensation at home.
He had first been admitted to the Cardiology sector of the San Michele hospital in Cagliari and later he was transferred to the Brotzu hospital in the same city.
"The patient is calm and his general conditions are stable
," read the first medical report while the specialists considered that Riva was in "not serious" health conditions, despite the fact that he had to undergo that small intervention. to which he finally did not arrive alive.
In this scenario, the hashtag "Fuerza Gigi" had been registered on social networks to support Riva, honorary president of Cagliari since 2019, whom he guided to win the Serie A Scudetto in the 1969-70 season.

Riva, a member of the "Azzurra" that lost the World Cup final in Mexico 70 with Brazil, is the top scorer of the Italian team, having scored 35 goals in 42 games with an enviable average of 0.83 goals per game.
