Sufferers of migraines often suffer from severe pain.
A neurologist explains in an interview how Botox can help.
Bad Tölz -
It's an excruciating, one-sided pain in the head.
It is often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and noise.
Anyone who is familiar with these impairments probably suffers from migraines.
In the new neurological practice on the Tölzer Flinthöhe, patients can undergo special therapy.
Our editorial team spoke about this with neurologist Dr.
Franziska Hahn.
Miss Dr.
Hahn, you offer Botox treatment for migraine sufferers.
Actually, this remedy is known in a different context...
Most people probably think of Botox - i.e. botulinum toxin - as a cosmetic application for wrinkle treatment.
But it can actually also be useful for chronic migraines, for which there aren't many treatment options.
Botox is a bacterial poison and inhibits muscle activation and inflammation.
It also has a pain-relieving effect.
In our treatment it is injected into 31 different locations on the head, neck and shoulders - in lower doses than for cosmetic use.
Neurologist explains: Botox can help against chronic migraines
Do you have a lot of migraine sufferers?
What different types of migraines are there?
Migraines are one of the most common neurological diseases that bring patients to our practice.
It can cause significant restrictions on everyday life.
A distinction is made between the rarer chronic migraines - Botox helps here, for example - and episodic migraines.
The latter manifests itself in migraine attacks that occur every now and then.
It is good to treat it because it could turn into chronic migraine.
Secondary illnesses can also occur, which can be physical or mental, such as anxiety disorders or depression.
Migraine headaches can occur with or without an “aura”, which refers to, for example, visual or speech disorders or sensory disorders before the headache occurs.

What symptoms are considered a migraine?
Most people are probably familiar with so-called tension headaches, which are felt throughout the head and are often accompanied by neck pain.
Migraines are a one-sided, throbbing pain that gets worse when you exert yourself, such as climbing stairs.
In addition, there is often sensitivity to light and noise and nausea.

When should you see a doctor if you have a migraine?
If it doesn't get better with normal painkillers and you don't know the type of headache, you should get it checked out by a doctor.
If you often suffer from this type of headache and they bother you, or the pain lasts for a long time and nothing helps acutely, or you have difficulty tolerating painkillers, you should also see a doctor.
Then you can take prophylactic action.
Botox can be used in many ways - including to treat excessive sweating
How do migraines actually occur?
The cause is not entirely clear.
It is assumed that inflammatory processes play a role as well as fluctuations in blood flow in the brain.
It is probably a combination of many factors, such as genetic predisposition as well as internal and external factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress and alcohol or nicotine consumption.
The fact that women suffer from migraines significantly more often than men speaks in favor of hormone dependence.
To prevent migraines, regular sleep, regular meals and endurance sports such as jogging, swimming or cycling are beneficial.
When it comes to migraines, it is particularly important to look at the causes holistically and to know the individual trigger factors.
In addition to migraine treatment, are there other ways to use Botox medically?
For example, we also use Botox to treat excessive sweating.
Here the injections are then given into the armpit.
