Raisting - Very few people who drive past the village fountain on Raistinger Floßmannstrasse know about the historical treasure, which is hardly noticed here and is heavily covered in moss.

That is likely to change soon.

The tuff stones of the village fountain come from a Roman fountain that belonged to a small Roman settlement in the current Raistinger area around 200 to 300 AD.

It was probably a hostel on the famous Roman road, the trade route from Augsburg to Salzburg and the Brenner Pass.

During excavations in the “Hofstetten” gravel pit west of the radome on the current antenna site between 1984 and 1995, coins, vessels, remains of buildings and the original well with a diameter of 1.20 meters and a depth of eight meters were found.

The border consisted of cleanly hewn tuff stones that were put together without mortar.

Some of them were so well preserved that the current village fountain was built from them around 1990 at the intersection of Floßmanngasse and Ledergasse.

Albert Tafertshofer (78), Raistinger community chronicler and archivist, is one of the few who call it the “Römerbrunnen”.

Precisely because he knows the exciting story.

He hopes that an information board with the history will be installed here as part of the redesign of Brunnenplatz and Floßmannstrasse.

At its most recent meeting, the Raisting local council unanimously decided to provide a grant to the Office for Rural Development to update the square and renew Floßmannstrasse.

The Bavarian State Ministry authority is responsible for implementing integrated rural development, village renewal and land consolidation in Bavaria.

Appropriate subsidies have already been promised for Raisting.

Landscape architect Katrin Mohrenweis presented her plans and cost estimates to the committee.

Accordingly, the complete expansion of the north-side Floßmannstrasse to around 157 meters will cost an impressive 240,000 euros.

The south-side sidewalk expansion over a length of around 177 meters cost 145,000 euros.

The expansion of the square with the fountain would cost an additional 140,000 euros.

The costs will change a little, however, as the local council's proposed changes are incorporated into the plans for the square.

The path in the west should be completely eliminated and access to the fountain should be created directly at a right angle to Floßmannstrasse.

In addition, a small table with seating will be integrated into the square.

Based on the revised plan, the municipality wants to hold discussions with residents regarding the boundary and the design of this area.

After the hoped-for funding commitment from the Office for Rural Development, the measures should be implemented promptly.

Perhaps the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation will also contribute to the costs?

Finally, today's village fountain was built from the archaeological monument of the original “Roman fountain” from the years 200 to 300 AD.
