The thermometer is climbing and so are the wind speeds.

Two storms are shaking up the country - especially in the Upper Harz.

The thaw does not cause any concerns at the dams.

Schierke/Sangerhausen/Leipzig - In Saxony-Anhalt, the stormy weather with extreme hurricane gusts in the Upper Harz has not yet caused any major damage or operations.

This was announced by the situation center of the Interior Ministry and the Magdeburg police station on Monday.

The German Weather Service (DWD) had issued a severe weather warning for Monday and warned of sometimes severe storms and gusts of wind as well as extreme hurricane gusts on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.

On Monday evening, the weather experts gave the all-clear.

According to the DWD, wind gusts of 168 kilometers per hour were measured on the 1,141 meter high Harz peak on Monday night.

Accordingly, an average wind speed of 122 kilometers per hour was recorded by Monday afternoon.

It was said that the wind was slowly easing.

The Brockenbahn of the Harz narrow-gauge railways had completely suspended its trips up the mountain on Monday due to the extreme hurricane gusts.

It was said that trains should run as scheduled on the rest of the route network.

The current storm “Iris” not only brings storms with it, but also very mild temperatures that cause a thaw.

Plus it keeps raining.

In the Mansfeld-Südharz district, which was recently hit by floods, this is currently not a concern for people.

“The situation is relaxed here and everywhere,” said a spokeswoman for the city of Sangerhausen when asked by the German Press Agency.

“Of course we look at the weather forecasts and at the meltwater that flows directly into the helmets.” Continued heavy rain could cause the situation to become tense again.

“Everything is still pretty soggy,” said the spokeswoman.

Those responsible at the Saxony-Anhalt dam are currently not worried about the weather events.

Both the Rappbode dam system in the Harz and the Kelbra dam in the Mansfeld-Südharz district have sufficient capacity.

“There are no large reserves of snow and the amount of rain is manageable,” said director Burkhard Henning.

The situation should be reassessed on Wednesday, it was said.

Then, according to the DWD, storm “Jitka” moves in and gives the Saxony-Anhalters a “storm day”.

The maximum daily temperatures are up to twelve degrees Celsius.
