Donald Trump is on track.

The Republicans are likely to send him into the race against Joe Biden in the US election.

But who could become Trump’s “running mate”?

Concord – Everything is going according to plan for Donald Trump.

The former US president is the overwhelming favorite in the Republican primaries.

After Ron DeSantis' withdrawal, Trump could set the course for the nomination as his party's presidential candidate in New Hampshire on January 23rd.

In any case, in the polls he is well ahead of the former UN ambassador Nikki Haley.

The Republicans will not officially decide who they will send into the presidential race in the 2024 US election until their party conference from July 15th to 18th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Nevertheless, it now seems to be time to look ahead.

Donald Trump speaks for the first time about a possible “running mate” in the 2024 US election

That's exactly what Donald Trump himself probably thought. At an event in New Hampshire, according to the newspaper

The Hill

, he indicated for the first time that he would soon decide who his “running mate” would be.

In 2016, this was Mike Pence, who loyally served Trump as vice president for four years.

However, after the storming of the Capitol, the two Republicans fell out.

Since then, Pence has repeatedly criticized Trump and declared that he should not be allowed to become president again.

So Mike Pence is out this time.

Who else is considered for the deputy position?

At the event in New Hampshire, Trump said that people “wouldn’t be that surprised” by his election.

However, he will probably only make a final decision in a few months.

There is no rush.

But Trump also said that the person he was currently thinking of was a fairly normal person.

Trump gave the probability that this person would become his “running mate” at “25 percent”.

Who is apparently eligible for the deputy office under Trump

  • Tim Scott, Senator from South Carolina

  • Henry McMaster, Governor of South Carolina

  • Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey

  • Elise Stepanik, member of the House of Representatives

  • Kristi Noem, Governor of South Dakota

Donald Trump speaks for the first time about who is eligible for the vice office

When asked if Tim Scott might be the person he was thinking about, Trump simply said that Scott was a "great guy."

The senator from South Carolina also ran for president but gave up in November.

On January 20, Scott publicly threw his support behind Trump at a campaign rally in New Hampshire.

The 58-year-old said he came “to support the next President of the United States.”

Scott had previously said he was not seeking the vice presidency.

Trump mentioned other names on his own initiative.

He praised the “great” Lindsey Graham and brought another governor into play: Henry McMaster, who was lieutenant governor of South Carolina under Trump's only remaining competitor Nikki Haley.

“He supported me,” Trump said.

“Look, Henry McMaster was lieutenant governor under her [Haley] and he supported me…what does that tell you?”

Even Trump critic Chris Christie, who dropped out of the race before the Iowa primaries, is conceivable as running mate.

“I like [Chris Christie] better now,” Trump said.

Trump did not mention a woman's name.

However, Representative Elise Stefanik and Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, are also considered possible candidates for the vice post.
