Berlin - The program for the 74th Berlinale has been announced: a total of 20 films are in the running for the Golden Bear.
These include two German filmmakers, as the management duo Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian announced on Monday.
Film fans can expect familiar faces on the screens again this year.
This year's edition will take place from February 15th to 25th.
Dresen and Glasner: Two Germans in competition
Two German directors, Matthias Glasner and Andreas Dresen, are represented in the competition.
Lars Eidinger (48), Corinna Harfouch (69) and Ronald Zehrfeld (47), among others, star in Glasner's drama “Die”.
Chatrian said “Die” is Glasner’s most ambitious film to date.
Dresen is represented with “With love, your Hilde”.
It's about the resistance fighter Hilde Coppi in the Second World War, and actress Liv Lisa Fries (33) plays.
In addition to the two German films, a German-Austrian production is also running in the competition.
Actress and musician Anja Plaschg can be seen in “Des Teufels Bad” by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala.
Familiar names - and an animal
International celebrities are also included in the competition entries.
The Frenchwoman Isabelle Huppert (70) plays a leading role in Hong Sangsoo's South Korean film “Yeohaengjaui pilyo”.
Mexican actor Gael García Bernal (45) and his Norwegian colleague Renate Reinsve (36) can be seen in “Another End” by filmmaker Piero Messina.
The American actress Rooney Mara (38) stars in “La Cocina” by Alonso Ruizpalacios.
Lily-Rose Depp (24), daughter of US actor Johnny Depp, is part of the production “L'Empire” (Bruno Dumont).
It was already known that the Irish-Belgian competition entry “Small Things Like These” with Irish actor Cillian Murphy (47) in the lead role would open the Berlinale.
An unusual film tells the story from the perspective of a deceased hippopotamus - the hippo Pepe (director is Nelson Carlos de Los Santos Arias).
Pepe is also something of a celebrity - because he is said to have been stolen from Africa and lived in the private zoo of the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
