Itamar, Elkana's twin brother, wrote on Facebook this morning: "The heart refuses to believe the words I am writing. My twin brother Elkana Wiesel - is gone. He fell heroically yesterday in battle in the Gaza Strip."

Shuki Shomron, his friend, wrote on Facebook: "Rabbi Elkana taught together with me at the school in Bnei Dekalim. A sweet, talented, warm-hearted person and a great friend. I also had the privilege of running with him from time to time, just him and me in the beautiful hills in our area."

He will be laid to rest at 14:00 at the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem.
