The city is serious.

The traffic calming in the old town that has been desired for years will finally be implemented next Friday with the introduction of a 20 km/h zone.

Violations of the speed limit result in severe fines.

Dachau

– Traffic officer Volker C. Koch (SPD) was sure last July.

With a 20 km/h zone, they have “finally” found a way to bring “even more life to the old town”.

Since the introduction of a one-way street and a right-turn ban into Karlsberg had previously failed due to legal issues, the so-called traffic-calmed business area is now intended to bring everything that the city administration and city council have wanted for the old town for years: quality of stay, safety and an effective deterrent to unpleasant commuter traffic from the hinterland.

After the decision in July, which was supported by all city council factions with the exception of the AfD, the building authority took care of the technical details: signs were ordered, coordination with the police was made and a so-called traffic law order was formulated next Friday, January 26th , this preparatory work comes to an end.

From then on, instead of 30 km/h, you can only drive at 20 km/h.

The corresponding signs will be put up starting tomorrow, Thursday.

Josef Hermann, senior administrative director in the town hall, announced that the city will “regularly” monitor compliance with the new speed limit.

Drivers who drive faster than 20 km/h will then face severe penalties.

According to the current catalog of fines, exceeding the maximum speed by up to 10 km/h already costs 58.50 euros.

Anyone driving between 11 and 15 km/h too fast will be asked to pay 78.50 euros.

Exceeding the speed limit between 16 and 20 km/h costs 98.50 euros.

Pedestrians should be able to cross more easily

It is already clear today that significantly exceeding the speed limit is hardly possible on normal working days anyway.

Nevertheless, the introduction of the traffic-calmed business area is intended to “make it easier for pedestrians to cross and reduce unnecessary through traffic”.

The Dachau police believe that the city has made a good decision with the traffic-calmed business area - in terms of safety and traffic flow.

From a purely legal perspective, the town hall is convinced that there is no alternative to the order.

After the legal failure of the one-way regulation measure and in comparison to other measures - such as a "larger pedestrian zone" - "no other measure appears to be better suited" to achieve the goal of increasing traffic safety.

Although there is a residual risk.

Because: A so-called traffic-calmed business area may only, as the name suggests, apply to one business area.

However, many streets in the old town are not commercial streets, which is why there is definitely a risk that the regulation will be overturned in court - if legal action is taken against them.

But people in the town hall are calm about this, as administrative director Hermann emphasizes.

In the end, the question of whether the new regulation is legally secure could only be clarified by a court.

According to Hermann, there are no concrete threats of legal action yet.

In July, city councilor Andreas Gahr (SPD) called for people to show courage and not forego innovations out of fear of alleged legal skirmishes.

Because, as Gahr said at the time: “Reason is not always legally secure.”
