Special envoy to Orhikiv and Kupiansk
Perched on a hill outside the town of Orikhiv, overlooking the snow-covered valley and the positions of the Russian forces, the excavators have been working tirelessly for three weeks to dig trenches.
The earthen tunnels are dotted with refuges, so many combat positions to face the enemy without exposing oneself in the event of an attack.
A 16m concrete fort, lined with explosion-proof grills, covered with two layers of wooden logs and earth, and capable of withstanding 155mm shell fire, can be transformed into a command center.
Located 12km from the Russian lines, the positions are part of the Ukrainian defensive system, which extends over key segments along the 1000km front.
In front of this position are rows of “dragon teeth”, concrete cones, as well as minefields, to block the advance of enemy tanks and infantry in the event of an attack.
