Queen Margrethe II has officially left the Danish throne to her son Frederik.
Her abdication marked the end of an era.
Kiel/Copenhagen – As neighboring countries, Germany and Denmark can look back on an eventful shared history.
This is one of the reasons why the abdication of the Danish Queen Margrethe II (83) also made waves in this country.
With the change of throne on January 14th, the monarch handed over royal duties to her son Frederik (55) after more than half a century on the throne.
Claus Ruhe Madsen has a special connection to the Danish royal family
The ceremony, which took place in the Danish capital Copenhagen, was eagerly awaited, especially in Schleswig-Holstein, because the federal state directly on the border has always been home to a small Danish minority.
Claus Ruhe Madsen (51) has been Economics Minister in Schleswig-Holstein since June 2022.
The coronation of Frederic X is a particularly moving event for the CDU politician because Madsen was born and grew up in Denmark.
“Even though I have been the proud owner of a German passport for a year: Margrethe is and remains my queen,” he revealed in an interview with
Bild
before the ceremony .
During her time on the throne, Margrethe did a lot for the Danish people and had a decisive influence on the reputation of his home country, Madsen continued: "She always thought outside the box, shaped the royal family and led it intelligently."
Under Queen Margarethe, the Danish royal family was more popular than ever
Margrethe's son Frederik will therefore have to fill big shoes as king.
As Claus Ruhe Madsen further explained in the interview, the 83-year-old helped the royal family regain its splendor over the course of her reign.
“It brought people together and united them.
She has done a lot for art and culture and has worthy represented Denmark around the world.
When she took office, the royal family's popularity was 40 percent; today it is over 70 percent.
That says a lot,” says Madsen.
However, the Schleswig-Holstein minister is certain that Frederik and his wife Mary (51) are a worthy successor to Margrethe.
“They will be a great royal couple,” emphasized Madsen.
