Horst Lichter is considered a true all-rounder, but in a new “Cash for Rares” episode the likeable presenter is confronted with one of his weaknesses: knowledge of foreign languages.
Pulheim - At “Cash for Rares”, Horst Lichter (62) has experienced all sorts of things, from fake collector's items to sad individual fates to unique items that were thought lost.
In the Wednesday edition (January 17th) of the junk show, the ZDF presenter now has to face a very special situation.
Because the friendly salesman John doesn't understand German.
Horst Lichter has to speak English for “Bares für Rares” – and cracks Otto Waalkes jokes
Fortunately, the American has his husband Claus with him.
Together they want to sell a so-called 'fairy lamp', a type of glass candlestick, at 'Bares für Rares'.
“That looks very interesting,” says Horst Lichter happily when he sees the piece, which is over 100 years old, but then quickly comes to a standstill in the conversation with John: “In terms of the dialect, that’s… English?
American?
Australian?” he asks his counterpart.
He reveals to the TV favorite that he comes from the United States.
That's probably why John doesn't understand Horst Lichter's joke about his lack of English skills: "My English is only for runaways," the 62-year-old apologizes, alluding to an Otto Waalkes joke that the comedian has already made popularized in the late 1970s.
In his “Otto Show”, the joker repeatedly gave language lessons - albeit with incorrect phrases, sometimes translated literally.
So “English for runaways” actually means “English for runaways”, but thanks to Otto’s (75) incorrect translation, the individual meanings of “run” and “away” make it “English for advanced learners”. .
Painstaking questions, but: Horst Lichter does bravely despite his lack of knowledge
John's husband Claus doesn't get the joke either.
Although he already knows the answer, Horst Lichter then asks again afterwards: “Are you from England or where do you come from?” Claus, who was born in Germany, then reports that the couple lived in the USA for 20 years. but now moved to Reutlingen near Stuttgart.
Due to the lack of space, they now want to part with the beautiful 'fairy lamp', which was created around 1900.
“It is very nice, it looks like fantastic,” Horst Lichter begins in blistering English, but then switches back to German: “What would you like in return?”

Because John (2nd from right) comes from the USA, he only speaks English - this presented Horst Lichter with a linguistic hurdle.

Expert Sven Deutschmanek (47) estimates the value of the lamp, which was particularly popular in the Victorian era, at around 800 to 900 euros.
According to the art connoisseur, he had to make some prints because some parts were damaged.
The international couple is still quite happy with the expertise - and despite all their efforts, Horst Lichter even says goodbye in English afterwards: “It was me a pleasure,” he lets the two of them know.
In general, the moderator is always open and in a chatty mood, but some things go way too far for him.
Horst Lichter made it more than clear on “Bares für Rares” what he thinks about bullfights.
