Capes, dresses, shirts, corsages, jackets, sunglasses, jewelry, wigs, hats and hats: decades of carnival enthusiasm have increased the Fuchs family's collection.

Gräfelfing

– The Gräfelfinger Fuchs family loves carnival.

And keep track of what’s new, season after season.

Costumes and accessories are spread across two basement rooms and four closets.

“You have to spin a bit,” says Gisela Fuchs.

For her and her husband this year it is a carnival without responsibility.

In 2023 they organized the carnival events of the Lochhamer Laien-Bauern-Bühne (LLBB) for the 25th and last time.

Then she and her colleagues Stefan Gruber, Alex Mory-Köhler and Christian Köhler left the responsibility to a younger team.

Because they also temporarily acted as the Prince Regent Couple of the large district town of Germering last year (we reported), they were just allowed to open the Germeringer Gala Ball with a waltz again.

Gisela Fuchs wore a red evening dress, her husband wore a tuxedo.

“There’s no way a carnival costume would work,” says Gisela Fuchs.

She saves them for other occasions.

When the LLBB invites you to the carnival ball on Friday, January 26th under the motto “Lochham Magic Forest”, green tulle is planned.

When the entire Fuchs family gets on the train to Cologne on Saturday morning to attend a ceremonial meeting, the tulle is red.

“Kinder-Bons” T-shirts are also packed – cute enough to eat.

And for the carnival procession, which will be moving through Planegger Bahnhofstrasse for the first time since the corona pandemic on Sunday, February 11th, Gisela Fuchs has chosen a green frog prince cape with a golden ball and crown.

“It’s great because you can dress warmly underneath.”

“This is only available in Cologne”: Whenever the Fuchs family finds the time, they stock up on costumes and accessories in Cologne carnival shops.

This year, however, it is only enough to attend one ceremonial session.

The cupboards in the basement of the Fuchs House on Hörwarthstrasse are full to capacity.

One bag contains crowns and hair accessories, another contains doctor's supplies and make-up.

There is also a box with little hats, all brought from Cologne.

Emmy the dog gets a different one every day during carnival.

“There’s a photo on Facebook,” says Gisela Fuchs.

A plastic box contains chains and sequins, as well as heirlooms like her great-grandfather's cigarette holder.

Among the hats is Grandpa's top hat.

One box contains gloves and tights, another contains smaller spooky things: skulls and spiders.

There are lots of crazy sunglasses.

“You can only get something like this in Cologne,” says Gisela Fuchs, with a glittering silver curved model in her hand.

One is missing from the shelf with the wigs; the nephew borrowed it.

His friends teased him about coming back in the same costume as always.

Then he called his aunt and had himself outfitted.

“This year he’s going as a woman.”

Gisela Fuchs doesn't see herself as a costume rental company, but she does help out.

Last year, for example, the Germeringen carnival motto was “Back on the Dance Floor”.

Mayor Andreas Haas was provided with a gold and flashing jacket for Shrove Tuesday.

The jacket - of course bought in Cologne - was worn by Gerhard Fuchs in 2018 when the LLBB's motto was “Golden Times”.

Gisela Fuchs wore a gold pleated dress at the time, and her daughters Julia (32) and Alexandra (31) wore gold sequin dresses.

“We gave them the carnival gene,” says Gisela Fuchs.

Since they were five years old, the daughters have been dancing with the Germeringer show dance club Fun Unlimited, of which Gerhard Fuchs is now chairman.

Gisela Fuchs has fond memories of many of her costumes.

For example with the silver cape made of glittery fabric, the clasp of which consists of a CD cut in half.

“As a child, I collected the carnival magazines from the leisure revue.

Something with extraterrestrials has always fascinated me.” So around two decades ago, she sat down with friends to spend several evenings working on the costumes that won them second place at the carnival ball at the Gasthof Böck in Unterbrunn.

Another time Gisela Fuchs went to the women's carnival with her friends as FC Prosecco.

The 15 women sewed football-shaped bags together.

“None of us could sew at all.” For Gisela Fuchs, the appeal of carnival is not just dressing up and celebrating.

The anticipation and the joint preparation, not taking yourself so seriously, are at least as important.

Gisela Fuchs can't say exactly how she got her enthusiasm for carnival.

She still remembers that as a child she was allowed to throw a party for Mardi Gras in addition to her birthday.

“I was everything, Dutch, Spanish, but I was never allowed to be a princess.” Her mother didn’t think she was princess-like enough.

But then she hadn't yet seen her in gold or as a prince regent.
