Le Figaro Lyon

After more than twenty years of good and loyal service, single-use TCL (the Lyon public transport network) tickets will disappear.

From February 15, a new contactless and reusable ticket will be available.

This cardboard ticket can be refilled ten times and will allow you to purchase single tickets but also books of ten tickets, long-term tickets (2 hours, evening, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours), family tickets, etc. “

With the different offers, whether payment by card or subscription,

the single ticket has become obsolete, particularly due to its environmental impact

,” commented Bruno Bernard, president of Sytral and the metropolis of Lyon.

This ticket, worth €0.2, can be purchased in vending machines, on buses, in TCL agencies and at resellers.

It can be recharged ten times for a period of 3 years, whether for a single ticket or for books of ten.

A contactless ticket will therefore be equivalent to between 10 and 100 current tickets.

Old tickets usable until March 15

Holders of old tickets will be able to use them on the network until March 15.

If they have any left after this date, they can be exchanged at a TCL agency until July 15.

Since May 2023, 480 new vending machines have been installed on the network to be able to deliver these new contactless tickets.

Last year, 50 million single tickets were sold on the TCL network, which has 1.9 million users every day.

A figure down 15% since the arrival in May 2022 of validation by bank card directly on security gates or on buses and trams.

Their disappearance, however, marks the end of a Lyon tradition of solidarity by leaving one's ticket, the hour of use of which had not expired, on the portico when leaving the metro.

A gesture denounced in 2017 by Sytral in a communication campaign: “

Giving up your transport ticket is not an act of solidarity or generosity, it contributes to maintaining fraud.

It’s called complicity in fraud and it pays for itself.”

Campaign widely criticized by the Lyonnais which even provoked a demonstration “

Solidarity is not a crime!”

Place Bellecour.
