An interview with a participant in the anti-right demonstration on ARD caused a stir.
It is not the first case of this kind.
Update from January 23, 2024, 5:41 p.m.:
A shitstorm has now broken over Haruna-Oelker.
She reports to
IPPEN.MEDIA
: “Comments are accumulating on all channels in which the unspeakable contributions that are circulating about me in the form of posts and videos are being sent to me.
With accusations, hostility and questioning of my person and profession.” A one-sided picture emerges on social media, “a typically right-wing framing, as the context of the HR post sent is missing,” says Haruna-Oelker.
The journalist emphasizes that she had a clear role at the demonstration against the right as a speaker on media topics from a racism-critical perspective.
“In addition, it is no secret in Frankfurt that I work as a journalist and I was announced as such on stage.
“My role and profession as an author was mentioned and that I am part of the ISD,” Haruna-Oelker continued to tell
IPPEN.MEDIA
.
ISD is the initiative of black people in Germany.
ARD station's own employee interviewed: "Wasn't just 'just' a supposedly anonymous demonstrator"
Regarding the specific interview situation last Saturday, she says: “I was interviewed in the stated role.
So in the function as a speaker and expert on racism, discrimination and a critical culture of remembrance.” You can also see in the article that she can be seen in a short original sound after panning from the stage.
“So despite the lack of additional subtitling that I am an HR employee, it should be clear that I was not 'just' a supposedly anonymous demonstrator.
But this is exactly where the right-wing frame comes in and I became a means to an end for bashing the public broadcasters,” says Haruna-Oelker.
A spokesman for Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) also commented again on the incident.
When asked by
IPPEN.MEDIA,
he confirmed: “Ms. Haruna-Oelker was neither involved in the creation nor acceptance of the contribution.” According to Haruna-Oelker, the broadcaster supported her in the further steps.
The journalist said: “Mistakes happen, but this instrumentalization by right-wing narratives is dangerous.
I'm not the only one who has to experience this now.
I spoke about right-wing, media strategies and critical reporting at the demo and we are now making this topic transparent in HR.”
According to information from
IPPEN.MEDIA
, HR very much regrets that the error could have occurred.
During the editorial creation and approval, we knew that Haruna-Oelker was an HR employee - but we neglected to mark this correctly in the article.
The case may be discussed again in one of the next “Hessenschau” broadcasts.
In the station itself, the guidelines for editorial work are to be tightened up again,
IPPEN.MEDIA
learned from station circles.
ARD broadcaster interviews its own employee at a demonstration against the right
First report from January 22, 2024, 3:11 p.m.:
Frankfurt - Last weekend, almost 70,000 people gathered on the streets in Hesse to speak out against right-wing extremist tendencies.
The largest rally against right-wing extremism and the AfD took place on Saturday (January 20) in Frankfurt, which, according to police figures on Sunday, around 40,000 people took part.
One of them was Hadija Haruna-Oelker, a journalist who deals with migration and racism research - and has been working for
Hessischer Rundfunk
(HR)
for some time .
Haruna-Oelker also works as a columnist for the Frankfurter Rundschau (
IPPEN.MEDIA
).
An interview on the
ARD
broadcaster's Hessenschau is now making waves, although this is less due to her and more to the public broadcaster itself.
ARD broadcaster interviews its own employee at a demonstration against the right – “mistakes made”
In the intro of the corresponding article it was said that “author Hadija Haruna-Oelker” was there - no identification of her work for
HR
could be seen by the viewer.
The post simply said that Haruna-Oelker was “part of the Black People in Germany Initiative”.
After critical comments on X (formerly Twitter), the broadcaster had to explain itself: “We interviewed Hadija Haruna-Oelker as a participant in the demonstration against right-wing extremism in Frankfurt.
We made a mistake.
We should have made it clear in the article that she also works as a freelancer for HR,” said the
Hessenschau
editorial team .

In this case we simply made a mistake.”

HR employee interviewed: Hessenschau article adapted to the media library – but not everywhere
The article is still available on the
Tagesschau
website .
In
HR's
own media library, the "belly band" and the soundtrack have now been adapted - and titled as
an HR
employee.
The Haruna-Oelker case brings back memories of July 2023: Back then,
WDR
interviewed its own employee
in a Penny report for the
Tagesschau .
The topic on the Tagesschau
was,
among other things, a price campaign by the Penny discounter, in which prices were increased by a dizzying 94 percent.
In this context,
WDR
spoke to several people in a post that has since been deleted, including Hanna Mertens, who approved of the increases and explained: “Because it makes you think.”
The broadcaster later apologized.
He told IPPEN.MEDIA
at
the time: “Interviewing colleagues without making their affiliation transparent violates our journalistic standards.
We regret this mistake, it was an oversight.”
