The Knesset plenum today (Wednesday) approved in a preliminary reading a bill designed to allow soldiers to vote in local authority elections also from enemy territories, including the Gaza Strip.
The proposal of Knesset members Michael Mordechai Biton and Ze'ev Elkin was approved by a majority of 14 Knesset members, compared to 6 who opposed.
According to the bill, in the general elections for local authorities it will be possible to place special polling stations for soldiers in territory held by the IDF even if it is not within the territory of the State of Israel, such as the Gaza Strip. It is also proposed to allow voting in special polling stations for soldiers in the week before the day of the general elections for local authorities
The bill comes in the wake of several postponements of the date of the elections, which were originally planned to be held on October 31, in the shadow of the war. The current date of the elections is set for February 27, after the government approved in December the postponement of the local authority elections from the end of January

L, because he will not be able to release about 700 reservists running in the elections.
Religious Zionist chairman Bezalel Smotrich, who led the process of rejection, welcomed his approval: "We led this rejection on behalf of tens of thousands of soldiers who are not willing to give up the right to choose and be elected."
They will be able to vote - also in the Gaza Strip/Dover of the IDF
"I congratulate the members of the Israeli government who postponed the elections," Smotrich said.
"When our soldiers are on the front, they cannot participate in the vote and the last thing the citizens of Israel need is debates about an election campaign."
Also, the Yesh Atid party announced that it would support the postponement of the election date as well.
The decision on the postponement is expected to be approved tomorrow by the Knesset's Interior Committee, where a majority of 12 of the 15 committee members is required.
The support of Yesh Atid - which has 2 MKs in the committee - completes the coalition with the majority needed to approve the decision in the committee.
