Empty train stations, lots of traffic jams: GDL strike hits traffic in Bavaria

2024-01-24T15:37:22.819Z

Highlights: Deutsche Bahn has been running long-distance and local transport according to an emergency timetable. More than 20 routes of regional and regional express trains were completely canceled, while on other routes trains only ran sporadically or every four hours. Traffic was already heavier than usual in the morning, and there were also significant traffic jams at lunchtime, for example on the A94 and A99 motorways. The collective bargaining dispute, which has been ongoing since November, is the fourth and, at six days, longest labor dispute.

The train drivers' strike brings train traffic in Bavaria to a standstill.

An emergency timetable is in force, but many trains are canceled.

Munich – The strike by train drivers at Deutsche Bahn (DB) has paralyzed a significant part of train traffic in Bavaria.

Since Wednesday, January 24th, DB has been running long-distance and local transport according to an emergency timetable.

In regions such as Allgäu, Middle Franconia, Main Franconia and northeast Bavaria, more than 20 routes of regional and regional express trains were completely canceled, while on other routes trains only ran sporadically or every four hours.

Effects beyond the GDL area - control stations are also on strike

Railway companies that are not directly on strike by the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) are also affected.

GDL members joined the strike in some DB Netz signal boxes.

At Go-Ahead, the Allgäu network was hit again, as in previous collective bargaining rounds: “The signal boxes in Mindelheim and Memmingen are on strike,” according to the Go-Ahead announcement.

A replacement bus service has been set up for the connection between Lindau and Buchloe until Monday, January 29th.

The Bavarian Regional Railway recorded failures on the Augsburg - Füssen, Munich - Füssen and Buchloe - Füssen lines on Wednesday.

A shuttle bus was used between Buchloe and Füssen.

Strike effects visible on the streets – more traffic than usual

There was more traffic on the roads on Wednesday than on a normal working day, reported a spokesman for ADAC Südbayern.

Traffic was already heavier than usual in the morning, and there were also significant traffic jams at lunchtime, for example on the A94 and A99 motorways.

The collective bargaining dispute, which has been ongoing since November, is the fourth and, at six days, longest labor dispute.

In addition to wage demands, the main focus of the dispute is the reduction of weekly working hours for shift workers from 38 to 35 hours with the same pay.

The Bavarian Economic Advisory Council called for a reform of the right to strike.

“Central areas of public services as well as basic mobility services must not be paralyzed across the board for a week,” said President and CSU MEP Angelika Niebler.

She appealed to the GDL to return to the negotiating table.
