Great joy for the Freising band RIJO: At the “German Rock & Pop Prize” the three musicians won awards in four categories.

- After the Freising group emerged as the winning trio at the same award ceremony last year, this time the honors have a very special meaning for the band members - because it wasn't just their music itself that was honored.
RIJO members Rike Mahlberg and Johanna Schlager from the band RIJO describe their awards at the “41.
German Rock & Pop Prize”, in which the Freising band’s album “Eins” was awarded in the categories “Best Pop Album” and “Best Booklet & Inlaycard”.
The song “I only wanna live with you” was also named “Best Pop Song of the Year, English Language”, and the video clip for the “RIJO Song” can now be called “Best Music Video”.
“Great confirmation”
Singer and keyboardist Rike Mahlberg knows that what is special about the prize is that it is an “award from musicians for musicians”: “The winners are chosen by a 30-person jury from the music industry.
That's a great honor." For them, the awards are also "a great confirmation": The band RIJO already won big at the 40th German Rock & Pop Prize in 2022: In addition to the award for best pop band for the song “Oh Karin” gave the trio three more awards to celebrate.
Wouldn't that have been reason enough to opt for the "41st" anyway?
For Rike Mahlberg, a completely different factor played a role in applying for the German Rock & Pop Prize: “In 2022, we were only able to apply with individual songs from our album.
That was published in October 2022, but the registration deadline for the entire album was already in the middle of the year.” So the decision was easy for her to submit the application documents again in 2023.
“I just felt the need: Now let’s try it again.
And this time with our entire EP 'Eins',” says the singer.
“Huge joy”
RIJO did not expect another success.
That's why the band members were so happy.
“You don’t get used to something like that,” reports singer and guitarist Johanna Treffen with a smile.
She is especially happy for her musical partner: “Rike is not only involved in the songs for us, but also takes care of photos, videos and our cover, for example.
I think it’s great that we’ve now been recognized for this too.”
No pain no gain
The fact that these awards are no coincidence is shown by the effort that Rike Mahlberg put into the excellent music video for the “RIJO song”.
“It took me about a year and a half – with breaks of course –,” she remembers.
She created the video entirely on her own: to animate, she uses a drawing program on her iPad, which has become her most important work tool.
“This is my mobile office and, so to speak, my creative machine,” says Rike Mahlberg and laughs.

For Mahlberg and Hit, who are on stage together with guitarist Krispin Benock, the awards mean additional motivation to give more concerts again in the new year.
And who knows, maybe we can look forward to new awards at the end of the year.
