School buildings in the South, together with those on the Islands and in the Centre, on average require urgent interventions for one school in two, compared to schools in the North which require them in only 21.2% of cases.

In Sicily and Calabria, as many as one school in three needs urgent maintenance interventions: in the capital cities, no new school buildings have been built in the last 5 years.

This is supported by the 23rd "School Ecosystem" report by Legambiente.

The research provides a snapshot of the state of health of 6,343 school buildings, falling under the jurisdiction of 93 provincial capital municipalities (out of the 110 existing ones, therefore equal to 85%), attended by over 1.2 million students.

In Sicily and Calabria - where all the provincial capitals, with the sole exception of Caltanissetta, are in seismic area 1 and 2 - on average, in 65% of cases the seismic vulnerability check was not carried out.

On the insecurity front, another special observation is Central Italy, hit by the 2016 earthquake: in the last 5 years, Legambiente reports, only 3.4% of buildings have been subjected to seismic adaptation interventions.

Full time is practiced on average in only 20% of schools in the South and the Islands, compared to an average of 35% of classes in the Center and North.

In Southern Italy one school in two does not have gyms or sports facilities and where the facilities are functioning, those that are open outside school hours are just over 40% in the cities of the South and 33% in the Islands, compared to over 60% in the provincial capitals of the Central-North.

To date, it is difficult to implement the planned allocations of the Pnrr, with more than 40% of the interventions blocked in the initial phase of the project.
