The American CIA is recruiting Russian double agents online.
The Kremlin scoffs.
However, the offensive does not seem laughable at all.
Kremlin - The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has released a Russian-language video in which Russian intelligence officers are supposed to be convinced to serve as double agents.
The video caused ridicule in the Kremlin: “Someone has to tell the CIA that Vkontakte is much more popular in our country than the banned X,” explains Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the
Kyiv Post
.
“The CIA does this all the time,” Peskov said.
And in fact: There are already four videos in the CIA's YouTube playlist called "Contact the USA Safely": three with a cinematic presentation and one instruction.
The oldest video is the year-old guide explaining how to have safe contact with the USA.
The videos should circulate not only there, but also on Telegram.
Melancholic and heroic: The CIA video awakens Soviet dreams
The latest video is about a fictional 35-year-old man who works in the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate and sees himself as a patriot.
The presentation is nostalgic, it's about his father's Soviet values.
During the narration, the narrator realizes that “the real enemy” lies within.
“The top leadership has sold the land for palaces and yachts while our soldiers chew rotten potatoes and shoot prehistoric weapons.
Our people are forced to pay bribes just to get a job,” the story goes.
There is also a quote from Tolstoy: “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves.” The Russian intelligence officer says his patriotism led him to the cooperation.
At the end, the CIA explains how to establish communication via encrypted channels.
CIA sees opportunity in discontent – campaign on Telegram successful
William Burns, the CIA director, said
in July that dissatisfaction among some Russians with Russian foreign policy was a rare change for spy recruiting, according to
Ukrainska Pravda .
The campaign is intended to convince those who are already dissatisfied with the Ukraine war.
In the same context, Burns also referred to having sent messages via Telegram.
He said at the time the message had been viewed 2.5 million times in its first week.

Since this video is also said to have been sent on Telegram, Kremlin spokesman Peskov's mockery could have been expressed too early.
In recent months, dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin's war policies has increased and a women's movement has exerted pressure.
