Things could get tight for the two front runners in the next few years.
The current trend in baby names does not speak for them.
Munich – How about an experiment?
Stand in the busy pedestrian zone on a Saturday and shout “Maria”.
You'll be amazed at how many Munich women turn around.
The situation is likely to be similar if you ask for a “Michael”.
Most popular first names in Munich: Maria and Michael still in the front
Maria and Michael are the first names that are most common among Munich residents.
And this has been the case for over 15 years, as the state capital's statistical office reveals.
At the end of 2023, almost 14,000 Michaels lived in Munich, and almost 12,000 Marias were registered.
Both first names hold the top position, even though they are currently not trendy at all.
This is proven by current evaluations by the Statistical Office.
The most popular name for girls born in the city in 2023 was Emilia.
Emma, Mia, Mila and Marie follow in their places.
Number of births in Munich declining
Maria didn't even make it into the top 50 - nor did Michael among the boys.
In the name ranking of Munich residents born in 2023, Leon is ahead of Maximilian, Paul, Noah and Anton.
The Statistical Office reports that 15,667 children were born in Munich last year;
a decrease of 5.3 percent compared to 2022. Births are only taken into account if the mother had her main residence in the state capital.
It will probably become increasingly difficult for Michael and Maria to hold on to the top positions in the coming years.
Unless the names experience an unexpected revival.
