The Constitutional Council largely censored the government's immigration bill this Thursday, deleting 32 measures, including many additions obtained by the right during the examination of the text in Parliament.
A little over a month after the adoption of the bill by the joint committee (CMP), the announcement of the Sages' decision did not fail to provoke a reaction from the political class.
Gérald Darmanin welcomed on X that
“the Constitutional Council validates the entirety”
of his bill, despite more than a third of the censored articles.
“
Never has a text provided so many means for expelling delinquents and so many requirements for the integration of foreigners!
The government takes note, as I was able to indicate during the debates, of the censorship of numerous articles added to Parliament, for non-compliance with parliamentary procedure
,” continued the Minister of the Interior.
After the adoption by the CMP of a bill, Emmanuel Macron himself expressed his doubts in the program “C à vous”:
“I think that there are provisions which are not in conformity with our Constitution."
The Renaissance president of the Law Commission, Sacha Houlié, who had expressed his disagreements with the toughened text, was also delighted that the Constitutional Council “
validates the government's initial bill which can now expel delinquents, regularize workers and implement simplified procedures.
“A coup from the judges”, according to Bardella
On the right, where we have worked to harden the text, the decision of the Sages goes badly.
The head of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, deplored the censorship before calling for a reform of the Constitution:
“The Constitutional Council has censored the immigration law.
They judged in politics rather than in law.
This censorship was expected by Emmanuel Macron and the left.
A constitutional reform appears more essential than ever to safeguard the destiny of France!”
.
Same story with his counterpart from the National Rally (RN), Jordan Bardella, who denounced a
“coup of force by the judges”.
Before joining the LR demand:
“The only solution is the referendum on immigration.”
Unsurprisingly, the left welcomes the verdict of the institution of rue Montpensier.
Among the Insoumis, Manuel Bompard thus castigated “
the worst racist delusions of Macron and Le Pen”,
before calling for the withdrawal of the law: “
The law is completely amputated.
It has no legitimacy.
It must be removed.
» The first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure expressed his
“relief”
before castigating the government’s call “
to pass a law aligning with the historic positions of the far right under pressure from LR.”
A relief shared by the ecologist Sandrine Rousseau:
“No more national preference, quotas, student deposit or reform of family reunification.
The constitutional council recalled the fundamentals of our republic.
Relief,”
she said.
For his part, the communist Ian Brossat described the decision as a
“monumental slap for the government”.
