War correspondent Junpei Yasuda has just won an important victory against the only country he has ever been in conflict with: his own.
On Thursday, the Tokyo court ordered Gaimusho (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to issue him the passport that the latter had refused him for five years.
Judge Yukio Shinada ruled that the decision to deprive him constituted an abuse of power, was illegal and should be overturned.
“Although I returned to my country, I was still in detention.
This situation has come to an end
,” rejoiced the person concerned at a press conference after the decision.
Since 2018, the Japanese administration has denied Junpei Yasuda the right to travel abroad on the grounds that he represented a danger to Japan's trusting diplomatic relations with other countries.
Reason: a ban, issued by Turkey alone, on penetrating its territory, miraculously appearing after its last return to Japan.
