Because of the farmers' protests, state parliament President Schellenberger in Saxony-Anhalt is canceling the Holocaust commemoration ceremony.
There is criticism from the Greens.
Magdeburg - No commemoration, but farmers' protests: In Saxony-Anhalt, announced demonstrations by farmers ensured that state parliament President Gunnar Schellenberger (CDU) canceled a planned central memorial hour for the national Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The protests have been registered on Magdeburg Cathedral Square in front of the parliament building, the state parliament administration announced on Thursday (January 25, 2024).
According to the information, this also affects the planned wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the persecuted and murdered Magdeburg Sinti and Roma.
Both events should be rescheduled.
Rejection makes waves: Greens criticize CDU man Schellenberger
The cancellation made waves.
After the decision, the Council of Elders met briefly in parliament.
Green parliamentary group leader Cornelia Lüddemann told the German Press Agency before the meeting that the rejection was “hard to beat in terms of lack of instinct”.
She spoke of Schellenberger going it alone.
2,500 participants and around 300 tractors are expected, explained Schellenbarger.
According to the CDU politician, it will not be possible to ensure appropriate commemoration, unhindered arrival and departure or a complete guarantee of the safety of the participants.
The farmers had recently announced new protests.

January 27th is Holocaust Remembrance Day in Germany: cancellation in Magdeburg
Since 1996, January 27th has been celebrated as Holocaust Remembrance Day in Germany.
In many places, wreaths are laid in remembrance on this day.
On January 27, 1945, Red Army soldiers liberated the survivors of the German Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in occupied Poland.
The Nazis murdered more than a million people there.
It was also clear at the weekend that it was important for the local people to deal with the National Socialist era.
Many there took part in the nationwide “demonstrations against the right”.
In Magdeburg and Halle, a total of 17,800 people took to the streets against right-wing extremism on Saturday.
