Highlights: Municipal utilities are starting geothermal energy planning: a treasure trove of heat for many users. In Röhrmoos, only the Arzbos utility company is close to the planned search area. In Dachau, a kilometer of pipe in the town costs 1.5 million euros. In Haimhausen, with predominantly single-family homes, the appropriate consumer structure is missing, according to the town hall boss. For this reason, and because it cannot be represented in terms of finances, the town will not enter into an inter-municipal cooperation as a capital partner.

In a few years, geothermal energy, i.e. hot water from the ground, will be used to supply a large number of Dachau households with environmentally friendly heat.

The municipal utilities have already started planning, and other district municipalities want to join in.

The only problem: The federal government, as an important sponsor, has withdrawn.

Dachau – The greater Munich area is sitting on a treasure.

There are neither gold veins nor rare earths underground, but there is plenty of hot water.

And this water is incredibly valuable in times of energy transition because it can be used for environmentally friendly heat generation.

A race has begun among the region's energy suppliers.

The Dachau public utility company has now gotten involved – comparatively late, but all the more determined.

In the town hall and in the headquarters of the municipal utilities, people are still keeping a low profile about the specific plans.

Stadtwerke boss Robert Haimerl simply explains: Yes, an application was submitted to the Bavarian Ministry of Economics in the fall for a permit to explore an area in the north of the large district town, which also affects the communities of Hebertshausen and Haimhausen.

And yes, they want to supply Dachau households in the long term using this underground district heating.

A geological feasibility study and an economic feasibility study are now planned as the first steps towards this goal.

The geological data from the study could be processed in such a way that, according to Haimerl, a test drilling would be “dispensable”.

In general, a test drilling would be “much too expensive”.

In principle, however, the following applies: “There is still a long way to go before drilling.” The municipal utilities are currently still in the “application phase”.

The good news: Apart from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, no one needs to be asked about the matter.

According to the Federal Mining Act, the hot water is a so-called mountain-free mineral resource, for whose use the state grants temporary concessions.

The plans have already aroused great interest among neighboring communities.

As reported, the municipality of Hebertshausen also wants to use geothermal energy for its citizens - as an equal partner with the municipal utilities, as was recently emphasized in the municipal council.

According to its mayor Peter Felbermeier, Haimhausen would also be very interested.

The topic of geothermal energy is nothing new there.

In the past, the community had examined the options for this energy from the depths twice.

Feasibility studies on geothermal energy were carried out in 2002 and 2014.

The results were pleasing, the situation in terms of the amount of water, temperature and drilling depth found was “very favorable in itself,” said Felbermeier.

“Nevertheless, we put the issue back on file.” Because the community cannot set up a geothermal energy project on its own.

In Haimhausen, with predominantly single-family homes, the appropriate consumer structure is missing, according to the town hall boss.

“A kilometer of pipe in the town costs 1.5 million euros.” In order for the heat from the depths to work economically, larger customers are needed who also need energy in the summer.

Firstly, in Dachau there are much denser and higher built-up residential areas.

Felbermeier is also convinced that there are companies that need process heat or cold all year round.

“I think cooperation is really good!”

Unlike Hebertshausen, the Haimhausen local council has not yet made any decisions on inter-municipal cooperation.

According to Felbermeier, the municipality will not contribute financially in the first phase.

But the two earlier feasibility studies with all the data will be made available.

“This is our contribution.”

In Röhrmoos, Mayor Dieter Kugler is happy “if our two neighboring communities Hebertshausen and Haimhausen get involved and set up the project with the Dachau public utility company.” In Röhrmoos, only the Arzbach district is close to the planned search area.

For this reason, and also because it cannot be represented in terms of municipal finances, Röhrmoos will not enter into an inter-municipal cooperation as a partner with capital.

But, says town hall boss Kugler: If the geothermal energy project comes, “we want to see that supply is possible for our district”.

Stadtwerke boss Haimerl is “always open” about inter-municipal cooperation.

The condition, however, is that “the interests of both sides are taken into account sufficiently and equally.

This applies to Hebertshausen as well as to other communities.”

The specific structure of the cooperation would have to be stipulated using a corresponding cooperation agreement.

Haimerl does not see the fact that the federal government recently put its funding for efficient heating networks (BEW) on hold due to the budget crisis as a problem.

We are currently only in the application phase for a visit permit.

Only after a positive decision from the Ministry of Economics can a decision be made about further action, including financing.
