Promoting the economic independence of women is central to curbing the scourge of femicide since they are not free to report the perpetrators of gender-based violence unless they are also free to meet their own basic needs, said the First President of the Supreme Court of Cassation Margherita Cassano on Thursday at the inauguration of the Judicial Year.
"There is no doubt that a strong commitment on the part of the judicial police and the judiciary is not enough, and that it must be preceded by a strong cultural and social awareness and prevention effort and by broad action involving not only the family and school but the entire community ," said Cassano.
This action, she added, "must be able to influence the general causes of this dramatic involution of interpersonal relations, in which the idea of possession and dominance over women and the repudiation of gender equality tragically prevail over the emotional dimension".
"It is also necessary to promote women's economic independence, as there can be no freedom to make a complaint without freedom from basic needs," said Cassano.
