Highlights: Michaël Azoulay and Michel Onfray: “The Jews of France, eternal citizens apart?”. The crimes of Hamas are crimes against humanity, unless we consider that the Jews are not part of the same humanity, they say. And we should not tolerate these citizens being constantly forced to ensure their safety, they add. They have only one thing to say to all these anti-Semites who hide their hatred of the Jews behind their aversion to the State of Israel. It is simply enough to love life in the face of those who worship death.

FIGAROVOX/TRIBUNE - French Jews are collateral victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, regret Rabbi Michaël Azoulay and philosopher Michel Onfray. And we should not tolerate these citizens being constantly forced to ensure their safety, they add.

Let us say it from the outset, the crimes of Hamas are crimes against humanity, unless we consider that the Jews are not part of the same humanity...

Now, in a certain way, this is what the Jews of France feel, when with each upheaval of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the same scenario, tirelessly, repeats itself.

They invariably suffer a double punishment: to the horror and fear felt in the face of the atrocities committed by Hamas is added the fear of its repercussions on the national territory for a community which feels increasingly isolated.

By what absurd logic, when, on both sides, this interminable conflict generates terrible violence more than three thousand kilometers from France, should French Jews be its collateral victims?

How can we understand that in the France of human rights, instead of the disgust and indignation that should unanimously arouse the ignominies suffered by civilian populations, some pour out their hatred on the Jews of France or refuse to condemn a terrorist organization whose crimes evoke those of the Nazis?

You don't need to be Jewish to suffer from this savagery which murders, and in what ways, men, women and children of all ages.

It is simply enough to love life in the face of those who worship death.

How can we accept that French citizens are obliged to ensure their security, supported by the government which is doing everything possible to this end, due to a conflict, both close, because today most of the Jews of France have family or friends who reside in Israel, and distant, because they do not directly concern France and its citizens?

Is it conceivable that in France, parents fear for the safety of their children?

The Jews of France are obviously sensitive to these signs of attention and to the protection provided to them by the State.

And all the more so since there was a time when certain governments were in denial of anti-Semitism.

However, because of this singular treatment, Jewish citizens have the feeling of not belonging to the national community.

They have only one thing to say to all these anti-Semites who hide their hatred of the Jews behind their aversion to the State of Israel: one does not need to be Jewish to suffer from this savagery which murders, and in what ways, men, women and children of all ages.

It is simply enough to love life in the face of those who worship death.
