There have been conflicts between the CDU and the Union of Values close to it for a long time.
The Berlin CDU state executive has now had enough - it is drawing a clear dividing line.
Berlin - The Berlin CDU state executive committee has made a demarcation decision on the occasion of the announced founding of a values union party.
He announced this on Friday.
The CDU clearly distinguishes itself from the political fringes of the left and right.
“For us, this also includes clearly distancing ourselves from the so-called union of values,” says the text of the resolution, which was available to the German Press Agency.
“Anyone who continues to follow the wrong path of the union of values cannot be a member of the CDU.
We will therefore take all legal measures, including expulsion from the party, against all those members of the CDU Berlin who are involved there.”
CDU leader Friedrich Merz had already stated that CDU membership was not compatible with membership in the union of values around the former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, against whom CDU expulsion proceedings are ongoing.
CDU accuses Values Union representatives of crude statements
The polarization caused by the union of values is damaging the political climate and political culture, said the Berlin CDU.
“This became obvious at the latest with their decision on January 20, 2024 not to maintain firewalls after the party was founded and therefore to be ready to talk in all political directions.” Representatives of the Union of Values, such as its chairman Maaßen, also made crude and racist statements more and more often and anti-Semitic contributions.
“Knowing our history and the devastating consequences of totalitarian power systems and based on our understanding of the values of the Christian view of humanity, it is completely clear to us that parties that tolerate racism and anti-Semitism cannot be political partners.”
According to the CDU state executive, democracy depends on respect for human dignity and respect for those who think differently.
“We oppose any efforts to attribute different values to people based on whatever characteristics they have.” The CDU makes politics for all people - even for those who did not vote for them.
“We want to build bridges instead of digging trenches.”
CDU General Secretary: Members have to decide
“The race for positioning in the far right - from the AfD to the so-called Union of Values to Sahra Wagenknecht - is deeply irritating,” said CDU General Secretary Ottilie Klein.
“We say to those who should still be in the Union of Values and are also CDU members: now is the time to make a decision.”
Conservative beliefs that coincide with the CDU's Christian view of humanity would always have their place in the party.
“If you want to stand up for our country and our democracy, then get involved with the CDU and not with those whose business model is division.”
The former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Maaßen, recently set the course for the founding of his own party with the ultra-conservative Union of Values.
In contrast to the CDU, it should be “ready to talk in all political directions”; the AfD is not explicitly excluded.

The Union of Values is not a party division of the CDU, but had sought proximity to it for a long time.
Last weekend, the association formally decided to transfer the naming rights to the Values Union to the planned party.
Maaßen spoke of breaking away from the CDU/CSU union of values.
