“Coup d'état of law”
, for Laurent Wauquiez
“democratic hold-up”
according to Éric Ciotti... Faced with the multiple criticisms which followed the decision of the Constitutional Council on the immigration law, censoring a third of the amendments voted by Parliament , the president of the high court Laurent Fabius refuted any political manipulation.
For him, the decisions of the Constitutional Council give rise
to “sometimes harsh and contradictory comments, but after a certain time, the decision is adopted”
.
“We have an obligation to see if there is a link between the amendment and the law, and if there is not, to censor it!”
, recalled the president of the Council of Wise Men.
While right-wing figures criticize the Sages for going against the wishes of the French on migration policy, Laurent Fabius recalled the neutrality of the high court
"We were not guided by public opinion"
, he declared, recalling that the Sages do not allow themselves
to be “guided by polls”
.
“Otherwise, we must put the director of Sofres (French polling institute, Editor’s note) at the head of the Constitutional Council
,” he quipped.
“The council is there not to provide political services, but to provide legal advice
,” he further defended.
The high court is
“not an echo chamber of public opinion, nor a chamber of appeal for the choices of Parliament”
.
And the Sage defends the constitution of the Fifth Republic.
“I believe that it has an important merit, and that is its great stability.
It is the constitution which, in the history of the Republic, has remained the most stable!”
, he welcomed, indicating that this stability is an
“asset”
.
