Guests rub their eyes when they enter Jonas and Daniel Fondaj's café.

A visit to the “Coffee Twins” in Munich.

Munich – “We haven’t been apart for a whole day,” says Jonas Fondaj.

“We are always together.” Together with his twin brother Daniel, the 22-year-old runs a café in Munich’s Dreimühlenviertel.

Jonas and Daniel are the “Coffee Twins”.

In the interview, the twin brothers talk about strange experiences with guests and explain why they have previously rejected offers of apartments in Munich.

You stand together in the store five days a week and also live together under the same roof.

Does it ever get too much for you?

Jonas Fondaj

: Of course sometimes there are arguments.

But most of the time this is done quickly.

I'm actually never annoyed by him.

We have a lot of trust in each other and don't know any other way.

Daniel Fondaj

: I think we just have a completely different bond.

Even in comparison to “normal” brothers.

We have already been to a few twin meetings in Munich.

Others have described it very similarly.

Twin brothers run a café in Munich: “Working with someone else is out of the question”

There are only two of you at work.

How does the collaboration work?

Jonas Fondaj:

Daniel is the most stable of the two of us.

He follows through with the ideas he has developed.

I'm a little more pessimistic.

Daniel Fondaj

: He is our manager.

Jonas is there when unpleasant things arise.

We complement each other very well.

That's why working with someone else is out of the question for me.

You opened the shop in March 2022.

At just 20 years old...

Jonas Fondaj:

Having our own café was always our big dream.

Since we were 15 or 16, we've worked towards it and saved a lot.

We were often laughed at back then.

This opportunity arose almost two years ago.

We are very happy that it worked.

We feel very comfortable here in the neighborhood, things are very friendly.

And yet you still live in Markt Indersdorf in the Dachau district.

Why?

Daniel Fondaj

: Several customers have already offered us apartments in Munich.

But we don’t want to leave Markt Indersdorf at all.

That's where we come from, that's where our friends are.

After long days in the café, we like to have some peace and quiet.

This is much easier in the country.

The “Coffee Twins” in the Dreimühlenviertel:

After graduating from high school, Jonas and Daniel Fondaj completed an apprenticeship as a pastry chef – together, of course.

The twin brothers opened their shop on Ehrengutstrasse in March 2022, “with courage and maybe a little crazy”.

Daniel explains the concept: “Our main focus is on high-quality coffee.

There are also cakes and pastries, all homemade.

We rely on regional ingredients and prefer to work with smaller shops.”

“It’s surprising to some people that there really are twins running around.”

It's not that easy to tell you apart.

How do the guests react?

Jonas Fondaj

: Some very strange questions come up.

New customers sometimes react completely irritated when they first see one of us and then the second one comes in.

Does that bother you?

Daniel Fondaj

: We're used to it.

Our shop is called “Coffee Twins” for a reason.

It comes as a surprise to some people that there are actually twins running around.

Ercan Demir ran a fitness studio on Ehrengutstrasse for 20 years.

He still raves today when he philosophizes about the “unique” atmosphere in the neighborhood: “The Dreimühlenviertel was always like a small village.

People knew about each other, everyone knew everyone else.”
