2023 ended with a curious record: never before had the world released so much CO2 into the atmosphere, and never before has the demand for coal been so strong.
These data from the International Energy Agency are puzzling, when reducing the consumption of fossil fuels is made a global priority to combat global warming.
The Paris agreement, which in 2015 called on states to take measures to limit global warming to 1.5°C, is in trouble.
Europe is often presented, in this context, as the big loser.
While Brussels is hitting Member States with ever more restrictive targets – the Fit For 55 package aims to reduce European emissions by at least 55% by 2030 – the main emitters are China, the United States and India would continue to pollute with impunity.
Therefore, would the abandonment of coal be a lost cause for which Europe would fight alone?…
