According to initial estimates by the organizers, at least 30,000 people took part in an anti-AfD demo in Düsseldorf on Saturday.
The police initially did not want to confirm this number, but spoke of a very heavy crowd.
So many people came that additional streets had to be closed for demo participants, said a police spokesman.
Düsseldorf - The demonstration was also allowed to set off a few minutes earlier in order to defuse the situation.
The demonstration march across the Rhine has the motto “Against the AfD - We will not be silent.”
We don't look away.
We are taking action!” The protesters included people of all ages, including many families with children.
In Düsseldorf tradition, some of the demonstrators marched with punk music.
On the banners there were inscriptions like “I generally don’t like Nazis” and “Not again!” A 69-year-old, who, in his own words, took part in a demonstration for the first time in decades, said: “If we don’t show our colors now, we’ll go in a direction from which we can no longer get out.” dpa
