The Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice have reached understandings that will allow hundreds of contestants in the local elections not to choose between serving in the IDF and participating as candidates in the elections. Thus, they will be able to continue serving in the reserves until the day of voting in the elections themselves. According to the understandings, which are published for the first time in Israel Hayom, A list of individual candidates or those who are not required for any campaign will be received, a list that will include about 165 contestants, who will be able to continue their military service in the reserves at the same time as they run. The agreements reached concern the contestants in the elections for local committees, that is, in the small settlements.
In addition, it was agreed as a precedent that approximately 450 candidates whose continued service is critical to the IDF will be able to continue to compete and serve.
They will be required to commit not to carry out propaganda in the service in order to run for the civil position in return.
It was also agreed that among the rest, as long as they run for local committees, they will be allowed to retire from the reserves closer to the election date (around mid-February) and until then, they can continue to serve.
The instructions that reached Israel today are expected to reach the units in the coming days and act accordingly in the face of hundreds of servants who demand to continue their service and not choose between reserves for the local elections that will be held in a month.
The background for the new instructions are requests from dozens of reservists who were required last week to end their service in the reserves due to their running in the local elections.
Some of them have already turned to the ministers of the interior and defense and demanded a mechanism that would allow them to continue serving.
