The birdhouse at the school center in Geretsried has to go.

What happens next?

According to “Bird Mama” Ingrid Brauner, various options are being discussed.

Geretsried

– How long will it continue to chirp and warble at the school center?

As is well known, the bird house there has to make way for the expansion of the Adalbert Stifter Middle School.

What then happens to the animals is not yet clear.

We spoke to “bird mom” Ingrid Brauner about the future of zebra finches, canaries, budgies and the like.

There are currently around 120 animals living in the bird house

The Geretsried resident has been looking after the currently around 120 birds for 33 years.

She checks on them every day, replenishes their food and provides fresh water.

How long she will continue to do this is anyone's guess.

The birdhouse has to go sooner or later.

“The end of 2024 is the limit,” reports Brauner.

Then the popular meeting point for walkers and families in the city forest will have to be gone because the space is needed for the school expansion.

As the commissioned architect announced some time ago, the birdhouse must be relocated in order to create an efficient structure.

In addition, Brauner is now 69 years old.

“In the long run, I can no longer do this alone,” she says.

“And my grandchildren need me too.” She does get help from a young man on the weekends.

“He likes to do it and has fun.

But the supply would have to be ensured permanently,” emphasizes the Geretsried resident.

She would like more young people to get involved, but “they probably don’t have the time or interest,” she suspects.

City asked for suggestions for a location on Facebook

Almost a year ago, the city of Geretsried looked for ideas for a new location for the bird house on its Facebook page.

A few comments with suggestions were received at that time.

A Facebook user suggested the forest cemetery, another thought of one of the old people's homes, and yet another suggestion was the meadow in front of the old indoor swimming pool.

When asked by the city about the future of the aviary and whether a new location has now been found, city hall spokesman Thomas Loibl remains tight-lipped.

“We’re on it and looking at solutions.”

Brauner meets with Mayor Müller at the beginning of February

A solution that would also suit Brauner: “We are in contact with a reception center in Baden-Württemberg,” she says, and according to her, Gut Aiderbichl is also under discussion.

But she can probably only announce more details after a meeting with Mayor Michael Müller at the beginning of February.

Of course, you would still love a place in Geretsried.

“I think the cemetery is ideal,” she says.

“I wouldn’t have far to go.”

What remains if the birdhouse actually disappears from Geretsried is the uncertainty of what will happen to the birdbirds that are found on site in Geretsried - and have always been given shelter in the aviary.

“Every now and then there is someone for forest birds,” says Ingrid Brauner.

“There is someone in Bad Tölz, for example.

But do people always make a special trip to Bad Tölz?”

In any case, it is clear that many Geretsrieders and of course Ingrid Brauner herself would miss the birdhouse.

“Of course something will be missing,” the “bird mom” is sure.
