Rescued!

It is thanks to Martina Zander that a number of fawns were saved from death last year.

She searched 350 fields for 75 farmers.

She wants to continue her mission in 2023.

In 2023 alone, she searched 350 fields to save deer: In an interview, Martina Zander from Neufahrn reports what drives her and who can help her.

Neufahrn

– In December 2022, Martina Zander (57) from Neufahrn founded the “We save fawns” association.

And the first rescue season in the following spring was a great success: around 350 fields were searched for 75 farmers and numerous fawns were saved from the mowing vehicles.

Now round two is coming up.

And Martina Zander and Co. could definitely use some help.

Ms. Zander, you are looking for volunteers for your club again this year.

Do they need any prior knowledge?

No.

If things have to happen quickly, the most important things are explained in a two-hour crash course on the field.

Between the end of April and the beginning of July, you go out into the fields with us from 5 a.m. and help save deer fawns.

Our area of operation is within a radius of 50 kilometers from Neufahrn.

This year we have five drone stations: in Dachau/Augsburg, Moosburg, Erding, Pfaffenhofen and Neufahrn.

We also welcome interested drone pilots.

In this case we also take over the training.

What would be the ideal number of helpers to really search all the areas you want to search?

Last year we had around 40 helpers and four drones on duty.

Since the number of threats has increased to five or six this year, it would be nice if the group grew to 60 people.

People simply sign up on a list and then we know when they have time.

Not everyone has to be available every day.

How did the collaboration with the farmers go?

Were there also skeptical voices?

In the lecture I gave to the Eching farmers, we were able to win everyone over.

Some have already dealt intensively with the topic, but very few have done so with drones.

With large mowers, farmers don't even notice when they catch a fawn.

It's different with smaller ones - and it's particularly bad if you then have to put the animal out of its suffering.

Quite apart from the fact that no farmer wants to kill a deer like that, they now face hefty fines if they don't take care of the issue.

But another professional group also plays an important role in fawn rescue, right?

Exactly, the hunters.

They must be informed in advance.

As crass as it sounds, if we do this without permission, it is poaching.

Are there any changes that you and your team have made to the rescue operations this year compared to the premiere in 2023?

We optimized a few things.

A company from Ulm provided us with a call center as a kind of donation in kind.

For the calls from farmers.

I particularly benefit from this because last year I only slept three hours at night during the hot phase because of all the phone calls.

We will also be using mobile fences for the first time.

The reason: after a certain age, fawns have a different instinct to flee.

Saving the fawns plays a big role in your life.

Where did the personal drive come from?

I love animals.

I have always donated throughout my life.

But then I said to myself: I don't just want to always give money, I also want to do something.

In 2022 I took part in the Munich Deer Fawn Rescue.

And then I had my first rescued fawn in my hand.

Honestly, that was the best feeling I've ever had.

And because I thought of 1,000 other ideas for saving these animals, I finally founded my own association in 2022.

Good to know:
