With its brilliant colours, after a demanding restoration work, the large ceramic panel of the Porta della Marina in Amalfi, the work of master Renato Rossi, one of the founding fathers of the art of majolica on the Amalfi Coast, recovers its original splendor.

The majolica terracotta blow-up depicts Amalfi's role as a crossroads between East and West and aims to tell tourists and citizens about the greatness of the ancient Maritime Republic.

"We are ecstatic to admire this extraordinary result", comments the mayor of Amalfi, Daniele Milano.

"We remember the initial conditions in which the panel was placed, worn by time and more. It is the entrance door which opens towards the ancient heart of the city, with views of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea. The work is part of the great restoration project of the so-called 'minor' cultural assets, together with the statue of Flavio Gioia and the commemorative plaques".

With the return to the city of Rossi's ceramic panel, to which its original polychrome beauty has been restored, "a first phase of the process of safeguarding the artistic-architectural heritage of Amalfi is completed", comments the councilor delegated for Cultural Heritage, EnzaCobalto.

The panel, which describes the routes followed by the Malfi galleys along the Mediterranean basin, a crossroads of peoples and cultures, has returned to occupy the wall on which it was installed from the beginning.

Made in the late 1930s, it stands out for its use of typically Mediterranean colours.

Completely dismantled last year, the terracotta blow-up was subjected to painstaking reconstruction of the parts damaged by the wear of time and climatic conditions.
