Costa Rica has tightened anti-crime measures following an increase in violence figures.
The homicide rate in this country has shot up 40% in the last year, leading President Rodrigo Chaves to apply a new National Security Plan, announced last November.
The plan includes increasing prison sentences for teenagers aged 15 to the maximum for adults aged 50, allowing nationals to be extradited abroad and expanding the use of preventive detention, making it easier to arrest suspects with limited evidence.
