Donald Trump could return as US President - Strack-Zimmermann warns of possible consequences for European security before an FDP party conference.
Berlin – The possibility of Donald Trump returning to the office of US President is becoming increasingly likely and could have serious implications for European security.
The FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has now warned of an upcoming FDP party conference, as the
editorial network Germany (RND)
reported on Sunday (January 28th).
FDP party conference for the 2024 European elections: Strack-Zimmermann sees the EU as ill-equipped for Trump's comeback
After Trump lost the election, many in Europe were able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Now, however, the former president could move back into the White House.
Trump's chances as the Republican candidate are good, especially after his main rival Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race and Trump pledged his support.
FDP politician Strack-Zimmermann criticizes that the possibility of Trump's return was not taken seriously enough.
“And that is fatal.
In this respect, I fear we are only prepared to a limited extent.
As far as European security is concerned, definitely not,” the politician told the
German Press Agency
before the FDP’s EU party conference in Berlin on Sunday.
Strack-Zimmermann fears that Donald Trump is a risk to NATO
“You always have to assume the worst case scenario and what Mr. Trump said when he was still president.
He questioned NATO, or at least the usefulness of NATO,” explained Strack-Zimmermann.
The FDP politician said: “He was actually quite angry that almost no nation in Europe achieved the two percent target and he repeatedly made it clear to us that he expected Europe to do its part too contributes to the security of the West.”
Despite military changes in Europe, Strack-Zimmermann sees the Republican's re-election as a potential risk.
“We can no longer expect the United States to automatically solve our problems.
In the English language it is called the Middle East, and not coincidentally in our country it is called the Middle East, because the challenges are on our doorstep in the Middle East, in North Africa and, for the past two years, in Ukraine,” said the politician.

FDP: Candidates will be chosen at the EU party conference
Strack-Zimmermann is now set to run as her party's top candidate for the European elections in June.
The traffic light government trusted in her competence as chairwoman of the Defense Committee, and she also made a name for herself among the population as a combative security politician.
The FDP politician has even clashed with SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz several times regarding military aid to Ukraine.
At the FDP party conference, not only will the candidates be chosen, but the future political course with regard to the party's internal European policy will also be defined.
The politician explained: “Everyone who is put forward as the top candidate knows that there are hopes of being successful.
Of course you carry a package,” she said.
She needs “support everywhere” from the party.
