Iraq and the United States held a
“first round”
of discussions on Saturday on the future of the international anti-jihadist military coalition which allowed Baghdad to defeat Daesh at the end of 2017, after the organization had imposed a reign of terror during more than three years in a good third of the country.
In order to further assert its sovereignty, Iraq wants to dismantle this international coalition as quickly as possible.
Washington is not hostile to it, but according to a timetable which would extend over three or four years.
As for other member countries, such as France and Spain, their positions do not necessarily coincide with that of the United States.
These are the elements of a complex equation, the resolution of which is made even more urgent by the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Indeed, since mid-October, more than 120 drone strikes or rocket attacks have targeted American and coalition soldiers in Iraq.
They are the work of Iraqi Shiite militias…
