The Left is weakening in election polls - and is looking at competition from the new Sahra Wagenknecht alliance.

At a state party conference, the left-wing leadership is encouraged - and shows its determination to campaign against the right.

Templin - The Left in Brandenburg has prepared for the state elections in September under difficult circumstances.

State chairman Sebastian Walter was elected the top candidate at a party conference on Saturday.

The 33-year-old from Eberswalde received 84 percent of the votes in Templin in the Uckermark.

The Left promised to stand up for social justice in the country and to raise its voice against right-wing extremism.

“We are the party that wants to and will take away people’s fears about the future,” said Walter.

The starting position for the party with 4,150 members is considered difficult.

According to an election survey from January, it would be 6 percent in Brandenburg.

In the 2019 state elections, the Left won 10.7 percent.

At the party conference, the Left chose its state list with a total of 38 candidates.

The list determines who the party wants to send to parliament.

Kathrin Dannenberg, who is the party's education expert, was elected to second place on the state list on Saturday with 84 percent.

Third place is held by Isabelle Vandre, a member of the state parliament and university policy spokeswoman, and fourth place is by Thomas Domres, who is responsible for agricultural and environmental policy in the state parliamentary group.

There were candidacies for some positions.

The member of the state parliament and migration policy spokeswoman for the Left faction, Andrea Johlige, came fifth on the list in a runoff election.

Gysi: Wagenknecht party is not the main opponent

There are debates about whether the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party, founded by former left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht, is costing the Left Party votes.

According to the election survey, the BSW would get 13 percent straight away and would therefore be represented in the new state parliament.

The Brandenburg Left also recently reported that a particularly large number of new members had been gained last year since the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance split off.

Left veteran Gregor Gysi said at the party conference in Templin that the Left's main opponent was not Wagenknecht's party, but the AfD.

The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance met on Saturday in Berlin for its first party conference.

“I'm vain, but I would never have dared to give my name to a party,” said Gysi.

He called on his party not to worry too much about themselves, but to tackle people's problems again.

“We are facing a difficult path that we have to master,” said the Bundestag member and former parliamentary group leader.

“Our fate will be decided in the 2025 federal election.” The left, which stands for solidarity and social justice, must now approach politics again with optimism and passion.

“Only the left can have the courage to take on the powerful.”

Left Party: Life must be affordable again

The state chairman Walter criticized the fact that those in power were saving money on those who already had little.

This also creates a breeding ground for the right-wing in the country.

There must be an end to social cuts.

Co-chairwoman Katharina Slanina said that life - food, mobility, rent - must be affordable for people again.

The Left does politics close to the people like no other party.

Among other things, she referred to the popular initiative that had been launched for free lunch in schools.

“We don’t just complain, we do it,” said Slanina.
