Carnival in the Aosta Valley has its roots in the past with historical and allegorical parades, dances and parties also dedicated to children.

Among the most anticipated events are certainly the historic carnival of Verrès (scheduled from 10 to 23 February), that of Pont-Saint-Martin (from 8 to 14 February) and the Coumba Freida carnival, held in the valley of the Great Saint Bernard.

Tradition links the birth of the latter to Napoleon's passage to the Great Saint Bernard pass and the costumes are intended to be an allegory to the uniforms of French soldiers.

It starts on February 8th in Etroubles, when the Landzette, with their colorful costumes adorned with mirrors, will dance through the streets of the town, entering the houses;

then they will move to Gignod (10-13), Roisan (10-12), Saint-Oyen (10), Allein (11-13) while on Sunday 11 February the historic Carnival will invade Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses.

In Valle d'Aosta the celebrations for the craziest month of the year begin on February 4th with the children's carnival in Saint-Vincent and Morgex.

''Lo Cammentran'' is back again this year, the festival at the foot of Mont Blanc, in Courmayeur, which will be held on 12 and 13 February: a riot of colours, sounds and traditional flavors mixed with irony and fun .

Finally, there are many villages in the Valley which will see floats and masks parading through the streets throughout the period, from Quart to Cogne, from Champoluc to La Thuile and Torgnon.

The most fun and colorful torchlight procession of the season arrives in Pila on Saturday 17th to celebrate the carnival on the ski slopes.

In Cervinia, however, the White Lady returns from the 8th to the 17th, a legend that has always managed to involve adults and children alike.
