Culture Undersceretary and art criticVittorio Sgarbi was found guilty Tuesday of defaming former Romemayor Virginia Raggi.
Sgarbi, 71, a TV personality and polemicist known for his intemperant outbursts, was sentenced to a fine of 2,000 euros for the charge of defamation against Raggi, a Rome judge ruled, also ordering a provisional damages payment of 20,000 euros in favor of Raggi.
Sgarbi was convicted after likening Raggi in 2018 to lateMob-linked Palermo mayor Vito Ciancimino, key figure in the 'sack of Palermo' construction scandal, over a Rome council demolition order, subsequently revoked, of a historic villa in the Art Deco Coppedé district of the Italian capital.
The quarter is an amazing hotchpotch of Liberty (or Italian ArtNouveau) and Art Deco works, with Greek, Gothic, Baroque and even Medieval influences.
