The Israeli public is torn between the desire to see the abductees at home and the understanding that the prices to be paid are very heavy - according to a survey initiated by strategic advisor Yossi Tatika and published this morning (Thursday) in Maariv.

The survey, carried out by Dr. Menachem Lazar, examined three scenarios for a possible hostage deal with Hamas - and found that the majority of Israelis agree to one or another outline. However, they are almost overwhelmingly opposed to a deal that would include granting immunity to Hamas leaders.

According to the survey, the preferred scenario, by 34 % of all respondents, is the return of some of the abductees in exchange for the cessation of hostilities for a limited time. No difference was found between the two political camps regarding this scenario. The next preference, with 28% of all respondents and 38% of those who voted in the 2022 elections for the opposition parties, was the scenario of the return of all the abductees In exchange for the end of the war and the withdrawal of the IDF from the Gaza Strip.

It also emerged that there is almost no public support for the scenario in which immunity will be granted to the leaders of Hamas - only 4% supported it, regardless of political affiliation.

The editor of the survey, Yossi Tatika, said that "the Israeli public is torn between the desire to see the abductees at home and the understanding that the prices to be paid are very heavy."

According to him, "If the Archimedean point of the deal is an inviolable condition for Hamas to grant immunity to its officials, then it will be difficult for the government to promote such a deal. In my opinion, the only way in which a part of the Israeli public will be willing to live with such a condition in peace, is to wrap it up in a larger process, such as the settlement International that includes Hezbollah's withdrawal across the Litani River and a peace agreement that will include Saudi Arabia."

"The survey leaves no room for doubt - the fact that there is almost no one in the Israeli public who is willing to grant immunity to the leaders of Hamas, even at the price of a deal to return hostages, indicates that the feeling of outrage and the intensity of the shock from the events of October 7 are still strong and well etched in the minds of Israelis."
