A 16-year-old teenager involved in an altercation between two groups of young people in Montpellier died Tuesday after being hit with a knife and six people are in police custody, the prosecution said on Wednesday.

Tuesday,

"around 6:45 p.m., an altercation occurred on the public highway, in Montpellier, between two groups of young men and girls who had found themselves there following a dispute of still undetermined origin"

, detailed the Montpellier prosecutor's office in a press release.

One of the teenagers was then chased by several people involved in the altercation.

“He was caught after a race of around a hundred meters”

and a

“helmeted individual struck him with a bladed weapon in the chest

,” said the prosecution.

Despite being quickly treated by firefighters, the victim, aged 16, died on arrival at the hospital.

The young man was from Hérault but not from the Montpellier metropolis, according to the same source.

An investigation was opened for murder.

Five people arrested by the police were placed in police custody as well as a sixth who
