During the “Cash for Rares” program, a picture by the Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer was brought to the table.

A woman from Cologne found it in her grandmother's basement.

Nuremberg - The artist Albrecht Dürer is firmly linked to the history of Nuremberg - he is considered the most famous creative person in the Franconian metropolis.

Born there in 1471, he spent almost his entire life in Nuremberg. Germany's most important Renaissance artist died in 1528 at the age of 57.

His works remain known to this day and are extremely valuable.

An example from the ZDF program “Bares für Rares” makes this clear.

Sarah Nickel from Cologne comes to the Pulheim rolling mill where the program is filmed with a hidden picture.

“It's not nice to hang it up with me.

“That’s not my thing,” says the 35-year-old.

So far so good.

But it is only at Friederike Werner's expert table that it becomes clear what the Cologne native has brought with her.

Albrecht Dürer picture in “Cash for Rares”?

Expert is sure

“This is a woodcut, the finest thing you can find in this country,” explains the expert.

“By Albrecht Dürer from his lifetime.” According to Werner, the object was designed in 1505 and finally printed in 1511.

The subject is the presentation of Jesus and is part of a set of 20 panels that the artist published in a book.

Although the woodcut was reprinted again and again throughout the 16th century, a watermark is said to prove that the one Dürer brought with him was a first print.

According to the expert, the condition of the print is tip-top.

That's why Friederike Werner comes to an estimated price of 3,500 to 4,000 euros.

1500 euros for a chance find in grandma's basement?

“Cash for Rares” dealers pay more

Sarah Nickel can hardly believe her luck, as she had expected more than 1,500 euros.

In the dealer room, the dealers examine the picture and are enthusiastic themselves - but in moderation.

Steve Mandel points out that “many copies of copies are in antiquarian booksellers.”

That's why Julian Schmitz-Avila starts with 1000 euros.

Only Susanne Steiger is still interested in the Dürer and is bidding for the object with Schmitz-Avila.

Ultimately, the dealer wins the contract for 3,000 euros.

But he only gives Sarah Nickel a deposit of 500 euros because he wants to have the picture checked again for its authenticity.

The woman from Cologne is happy with it and is happy to have sold the picture - it was just a chance find in her late grandmother's basement.

A real Picasso has caused a bidding war to break out among “Cash for Rares” dealers.
