Oberland is only represented indirectly at the free leisure fair

Highlights: Oberland is only represented indirectly at the free leisure fair. Miesbach district with the municipal company REO is not represented with a stand. “Trade fairs are gradually losing relevance. The number of visitors is falling.” More importantly, however, the REO would primarily attract day-trippers with a presence in Munich. There is probably less of a lack of this in the Oberland. And they also bring less added value to the region than overnight guests.

The free leisure and travel fair at the Munich exhibition center is currently attracting many thousands of visitors.

But the Miesbach district with the municipal company REO is not represented with a stand - for good reason.

District – Upper Bavaria is this year's partner region, and quite a few tourism associations from this region are represented with a stand at the trade fair.

Not so in the Miesbach district with the municipal company Regional Development Oberland (REO), even though it was recently complained at the IHK committee meeting that the district is lagging behind in tourism development (we reported).

Upon request, Harald Gmeiner, who is responsible for tourism at REO, explains why.

“Trade fairs are gradually losing relevance.

The number of visitors is falling.” More importantly, however, the REO would primarily attract day-trippers with a presence in Munich.

There is probably less of a lack of this in the Oberland.

And they also bring less added value to the region than overnight guests, emphasizes Gmeiner.

The number of overnight stays is increasing

When it comes to overnight guests, the district is in a better position compared to Upper Bavaria than recently complained about.

While Miesbach is at the bottom of the district in terms of guest arrivals, it is in the middle in terms of overnight stays.

Between 2008 and 2022 the number increased by 7.9 percent, said Gmeiner.

That is less than the 18.3 percent that Garmisch-Partenkirchen can boast, but more than, for example, Traunstein (5.5) or Berchtesgadener Land (3.9).

National figures for the past year are not yet fully available.

Hardly any representatives of the leisure industry

Incidentally, the successful Garmisch residents are also only represented indirectly through their tourism association through the Tourismus Oberbayern München (TOM) association, rather than with their own stand. As is the Miesbach district, whose tourism experts have been absent from the trade fair for at least 20 years.

But you will also look in vain for representatives from the travel and leisure industry in the exhibitor directory.

Cycling Zehndmaier from Kreuth is there, as well as Campermaker from Miesbach - the company equips motorhomes - and Tatjana Ortwein (yacht charter), also from Miesbach.

There may be representatives from the Oberland among other umbrella brands at the trade fair, such as the Alpenhof Bayrischzell, whose operating company is based in Beilngries, and which Gmeiner discovered during his tour.

The district's presence at the free remains very manageable.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Miesbach newsletter.
