The prosecution has given its consent to the plea agreement of 3 years and 11 months for Wolfgang Rieke, the 63-year-old German truck driver who hit and killed the cycling champion Davide Rebellin on 30 November 2022.

The request was made this morning by the man's lawyers before the Vicenza court, after the agreement on the sentence was rejected during the preliminary hearing.

The defense also asked for the sentence to be converted to house arrest.

The college will decide on March 11th.

During today's hearing, Rieke read some spontaneous statements: "It was a mistake - he said before the judges - and a tragedy. I'm very, very, very sorry. I regret it, I will accept my sentence".

The possible decision on the easing of the precautionary measure - Rieke is currently detained in prison in Vicenza - could be taken before the next hearing.

The Rebellin family had been compensated via insurance with 825 thousand euros.

Legal: 'The Rebellins satisfied with the course of justice'

"Davide Rebellin's family is satisfied with the course of justice so far."

This was stated by the lawyer Davide Picco, lawyer for the cycling champion's relatives, at the end of today's hearing for the trial against the truck driver responsible for his death.

"Certainly - added Picco - a lot has been done. It was thought that when the truck driver went to Germany he would never be seen again, but instead he was handed over to Italy and was sent to prison, so justice has certainly run its course."

Regarding the possible agreement on the sentence, for the lawyer "it is difficult to say what a suitable sentence could be in these cases. The family, I repeat, expects a suitable sentence; all that remains is to wait what the outcome of the decision by the court will be on March 11, and in any case within a few days the court will have to express its opinion on the request for mitigation of the precautionary measures that was made today. I will report to the family the words of Rieke who apologized and said he was sorry", concluded Picco .
