In the period 2016-2021, at a national level, 78% of rivers are in good chemical status, 13% are not good and 9% have not been classified.
For lakes, 69% were rated good, 11% were not good and 20% were not rated.
Overall, there is a general increase, compared to the previous 6 years, in surface water bodies classified as having good chemical status and a reduction in non-classified water bodies.
This was revealed in the 4th SNPA Environment Report, presented today in Rome.
As regards underground water bodies, at a national level, in the period 2016-2021, those classified in good chemical status reach 70% of the total (compared to 58% in 2010-2015), with a percentage of water bodies in poor chemical status of 27%.
At district level, the percentages of underground water bodies that reach good chemical status vary from 56%, recorded in the Sicily District to 85%, in the Eastern Alps District.
