SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE - The Spanish daily El País visited the Terrorism Containment Center (CECOT), the maximum security mega-prison inaugurated by the very authoritarian President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele, a year ago, in the midst of the war against the gangs.

It never gets dark here.

The cells and the interior courtyard are bathed in artificial light 24 hours a day.

The prisoners sleep on the sheet metal of iron beds which reach up to the ceiling.

A closed circuit watches over them like a silent god.

They eat beans and rice with their hands: forks and knives could be transformed into lethal weapons.

They wash their bodies and teeth in stone sinks and relieve themselves in two basins located at the bottom, in view of all.

Their outings in a huge interior corridor are limited to a maximum of 30 minutes per day, their hands and feet systematically chained to keep them bent and submissive as they walk on smooth concrete.

Hooded police officers armed with rifles are stationed on the roof to monitor them.

Everything in the facilities smells new;

time has not yet passed that way.

Several times a week, inmates practice calisthenics…
