There has been speculation about the sale for years.

Now the ink is dry.

Bullachberg Castle in Schwangau now has a new owner, the Wittelsbacher Foundation.

And she has big plans for the little Neuschwanstein sister.

Schwangau – A fairytale castle in a fillet location.

Viewed from a bird's eye view, Bullachberg Castle forms a triangle with the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles.

From his terrace on the 19 hectare property you can look directly at the two neighboring castles.

There has been speculation in the Allgäu for a long time about the sale of the “little sister”.

Now the Wittelsbach compensation fund has struck.

Hohenschwangau Castle has been owned by the foundation since 1923.

101 years later, she now owns another historic property in Schwangau, Bullachberg Castle.

“We are very happy to be able to take advantage of the unique opportunity to purchase the land and the country house and to meaningfully complement and round off our existing inventory at the location,” says Michael Kuemmerle, the chairman of the board of directors of the compensation fund.

The foundation also runs a hotel and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings in Schwangau.

In 2022, an advertisement from a Munich luxury broker had the rumor mill buzzing about a possible sale.

At that time, Schwangau's mayor Stefan Rinke (CSU) spoke of a “duck” when asked.

He couldn't imagine that the owner Elisabeth von Elmenau would sell Bullachberg.

She only bought the castle, including the chapel, riding arena, stables and agricultural land in 2012 and lovingly restored it.

The result was awarded the Hypo-Kulturstiftung Monument Prize in 2017.

And yet von Elmenau, who ran sustainable agriculture on Bullachberg, has now obviously decided to sell it.

Bullachberg Castle now belongs to the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund

However, Mayor Rinke reacts positively to the new owner: “With the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund as a foundation under public law, the property is back in good hands,” he says.

After the end of the monarchy, the fund was set up by the Free State.

On the one hand, the foundation is intended to preserve the cultural heritage of the House of Wittelsbach, and on the other hand, millions of dollars flow to the members of the house every year from the surplus generated.

The community has been concerned about the property for decades.

In 1907 the castle was built according to plans by Eugen Drollinger, Ludwig II's last master builder, and became the summer residence of an entrepreneur.

It later belonged to Raphael Prinz von Thurn und Taxis.

His heirs want to convert it into a luxury hotel.

After years of disputes, the municipality granted building permission for a small hotel with a golf course in 2002.

The project still fails.

In 2006, Porsche AG bought the castle for six million euros.

The amount for which it now changes hands is unknown.

But the Wittelsbach Foundation has already expressed plans.

The property, which consists of several buildings and holiday apartments, is to be rented out.

Parts of the 19 hectare agricultural area are leased.
